Far from being put out or agitated at the request, Hector found that he had a muffled longing to see Nicholas Parson again and that this letter gave him the perfect reason. He had a pang of guilt about using it to prolong his trip, but he did now have some solid proof in his hand. Proof that he could demonstrate to the powers that sponsored him.

“Horrid,” he thought to himself. Most horrid that Nicholas might be underground again. He did not worry in the same way that Barratt did, about his patient dying of asphyxiation. He was instead appalled by the idea of the interminable hibernation and all the forgetting of so much that the “young man” had achieved. It seemed an infinitely worse demise than the simple act of dying. He would go tomorrow after he postponed his passage home.

Hector settled in for the night. He remembered his last associated dreams and decided that he could do without one of those. He could also do without Compton and Himmelstrup nattering and sharpening their beaks on his attempts and rest. He asked room service for two very large gins, without ice. He planned to mix it with some of the hissing asthmatic hot water from his bathroom tap. Such a concoction would keep any dream at bay, and rampant nightmares would be extinguished by his breath, sent back to graze elsewhere.
